The iconic existing building is undergoing an extensive energy-efficient refurbishment to meet future requirements as a creative hub for a wide range of uses. Key measures include insulating the base slab to significantly improve the building’s overall energy performance – an important milestone.
The architectural model is taking shape
Small but mighty – the physical architectural model of Funkytown is in the works. It will depict the entire campus ensemble in miniature form – a real highlight for presentations, exhibitions, and visitors, helping to illustrate every facet of the future campus.
Tesla Is Coming to Köpenick
Tesla has announced plans to establish its new research and development center in Köpenick. With this move, the global e-mobility pioneer is strengthening the innovation hub in Berlin’s southeast – right next door to Funkytown. It’s a powerful signal of the growing momentum in a region where technology, creativity, and forward-thinking energy come together.

An exciting moment: the designs for all eight STATIONS have been unveiled. Each STATION bears the distinctive signature of its architectural firm – from expressive façades to bold material experiments. Together, they tell the story of a new, vibrant campus that will add a creative landmark to Berlin.

The feature explores how architecture, city planning, and community come together in Funkytown, creating an inspiring new model of urban creativity.
STATIONS’ Design Phase Kicks Off
Funkytown officially launched the design phase with a major kickoff event. Eight renowned Berlin architectural firms came together to shape the vision for the façades of the new STATIONS. The evening’s highlight was a creative lottery that assigned each façade to a firm – a fun and collaborative gesture that perfectly embodies Funkytown’s playful and collaborative spirit.

Construction Begins at BLOCK-E
Construction work has started at BLOCK-E, the former administrative building of the GDR broadcasting center. The project begins with concrete restoration. By improving the building’s structure while preserving its existing framework, we demonstrate our commitment to—and respect for—the history of this site.
Graffiti Art in BLOCK-E – Preserving History
The graffiti in the existing BLOCK-E building are part of its history—they tell the story of the site’s transformation. We knew these memories had to be preserved. The existing graffiti were documented, assessed, and—where possible—integrated into the planning to safeguard them for the future. This way, another piece of history remains visible and alive.
Campus development at Funkhaus Berlin
ith the acquisition of the Rummelsburger Landstraße 34–62 site, we are launching another project development centered around a historically significant existing building. At the heart of Funkytown is the four-story administrative building, which once housed the legendary youth radio station DT64. In addition, eight new buildings will be constructed, forming a green, open campus layout with attractive public spaces. They will offer studios, workshop spaces, modern accommodation, and a variety of flexible office spaces designed to meet both creative and commercial needs.

The vision for Funkytown is coming to life: a creative campus with a vibrant community spirit – a place where people come together to shape ideas and inspire one another. Eight renowned Berlin-based architecture firms have designed a striking skyline that will serve as a new “Gateway to Köpenick” – a powerful symbol of innovation and collaboration, and a key milestone in Berlin’s urban development.
We’ve given the rough concrete structures a refreshed look. Now they will set the stage for a blend of authenticity and modernity in the new workspaces. It’s a sustainable restoration of history – an innovative reuse of gray energy forged from the site’s legendary roots. And we are striving for even more goals, including a LEED certification. By preserving existing structures and upgrading building substance, we’re reaffirming our commitment, respect, and responsibility to the neighborhood.
