Elisabeth Heller, GDR radio broadcast
DThe history of BLOCK-E is fascinating and started in the 1960s with the construction of new broadcasting and production facilities for GDR radio stations. Among others, for the youth radio station DT64, which became an important voice for East German identification that is still legendary today. There are former journalists who share vivid memories with interested listeners and the time spent at BLOCK-E is repeatedly remembered. One of the contemporary witnesses is Elisabeth Heller.
Elisabeth Heller: “I have some very happy but also sad memories of this building. Back then, many birthdays were celebrated in our music department on the 3rd floor. We were young and it was a crazy time. It turned sad when the radio station was liquidated and I was handed my letter of dismissal, despite having protection against being fired. My complaint was supposedly lost in the post and so I had to take my fortune into my own hands.”
Elisabeth Heller: “It was a brand new building which was very well equipped. The editorial offices were all generously designed with built-in furnishings. One highlight was the Paternoster elevator. And, of course, the so-called “Sockelklause” on the ground floor, which we often used for relaxing after the broadcasts.”

We’ve given the rough concrete structures a refreshed look. Now they will set the stage for a blend of authenticity and modernity in the new workspaces. It’s a sustainable restoration of history – an innovative reuse of gray energy forged from the site’s legendary roots. And we are striving for even more goals, including a LEED certification. By preserving existing structures and upgrading building substance, we’re reaffirming our commitment, respect, and responsibility to the neighborhood.

In addition to the transformation of the existing building in collaboration with AIP Architekten Leipzig, eight new buildings, so-called “STATIONS”, are being built along Rummelsburger Landstrasse. Each STATION is being planned on the basis of an urban planning concept by the architectural firm KSP Engel Berlin and other Berlin architectural firms. KSP Engel will be responsible for the overall coordination and the design of the central STATION D.
With the acquisition of the property at Rummelsburger Landstraße 34–62, we are launching another project development around a historically significant existing building. At the heart of Funkytown is the four-storey administrative building of the former youth radio station DT64, which we are revitalizing with studios and workshops. In addition, eight new buildings with a green, open campus structure with a high quality of stay will be created. The eight new buildings will offer studios, workshop rooms, contemporary accommodation and a variety of flexible office spaces designed for creative and commercial uses and needs.
